OLDHAM INDEPENDENT REVIEW FIXES PUBLICATION DATE

Oldham Independent Review aims to produce its report on the town's riots on Monday December 10, chairman David Ritchie told a media briefing on Monday, 1 October.

The report will focus on events leading up to the disturbances in May, the riots themselves and major events since, including the General Election.

Mr Ritchie told journalists the panel was currently debating the format of the report which will be presented to Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council, Greater Manchester Police and the GM police authority.

Key issues which had already emerged included:

  • Housing
  • Education
  • Economy
  • Community issues
  • Young people

Mr Ritchie said that it was intended to publish the report on Monday, December 10, or shortly thereafter. Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council, Greater Manchester Police and the GM police authority would then be invited to reply by the end of February.

Mr Ritchie re-iterated the importance of encouraging residents to give their own contributions to the inquiry. To date, a total of 801 people have visited, phoned or written to the shop at The Spindles shopping centre.

Mr Ritchie said the daily rate of visitors was now slowing down, which was unsurprising, given the publicity surrounding the launch of the shop two months ago and the fact that many people had come to comment and have their say.

From Friday, 19 October, residents wishing to give face-to-face representations at the shop will be asked to use an appointments system. It will no longer be possible just to drop in. The staffing resources which this will free up will be used to assist in the analysis of comments already received.

Mr Ritchie said: "Now that the daily rate of visitors is dropping it makes sense for us to reallocate those resources, allowing us to proceed with our analysis of comments made as quickly as possible. Of course, we are still encouraging people to comment, and they can make an appointment or still call us on 0161 785 9347, write to us, or use the website to submit their views.

"Since launching the www.oldhamir.org.uk website, roughly 55 have visited it each day, and we hope that the on-line submission form will be used by many of the visitors."

The address for the panel is:
