Who are we?

We are a panel of seven independent people plus support team appointed to report on the recent disturbances in Oldham and ways to bring about a harmonious community in the town.

What are we doing?

We are asking the public for their opinions, talking to organisations and people with special knowledge of the issues, and writing a report.

When do we have to do it?

By Christmas 2001.

Who gets our report?

We are reporting to Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council, Greater Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Police Authority. The Home Secretary, who asked for this review to be set up, will also get a copy.

What will happen to the report?

We have asked the Council and the Police to respond within two months of receiving our report.

Are you really independent?

Yes. We are not controlled by the Council or the Police in what we do or say and the Home Office is meeting our costs.

What do we want to hear from you?

Your views about what triggered the recent disturbances, what are the underlying causes, and - most importantly - what you would like to see done to bring communities together in the town.

We guarantee:

Your anonymity. We will ask you for your name and address, and your ethnic origin, because this will help our analysis, but the information is completely confidential and if you prefer you do not have to tell us these things. No reference will be made to individuals' views by name in the report, except with their permission.

Your privacy - if you would prefer to be interviewed in a private room, please say so.To take your views into account. We will be counting the times particular issues are raised, and looking for good, practical suggestions which we hear from people.

Interpretation: if you have difficulty expressing your views in English, please make an appointment with us and we will arrange an interpreter. (We are not running an appointment system generally however - we do not have the resources to do this).

To see you as quickly as possible - if there is a queue please be patient. It typically takes about 15 minutes to interview someone and we will try to draft in extra interviewers when we are busy. If you want to come back when it is quieter the best time seems to be weekdays between 9:00 and 10:00am. If you would prefer to write to us there is a form available which includes our address and there should be copies available in the waiting area or please ask one of the receptionists.
